Advanced skincare isn’t about piling on products – it’s about smart layering that protects your skin’s natural barrier and microbiome while delivering active ingredients. At al.ive Skin, we’ve made it simple by creating a range that works together effortlessly, so you get more from less. An intact barrier holds in moisture and keeps out irritants. Research shows plant oils like macadamia, marigold, and jojoba can help repair the barrier and prevent water loss, thanks to their fatty acids and antioxidants. Similarly, prebiotics and botanical ferments (like inulin or yeast extracts) nourish the skin’s friendly microbes and support barrier health.
Barrier-boosters
Use hydrating humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) plus natural lipids. Our formulas layer multiple hyaluronic acids and native botanical oils to mimic the skin’s own moisture network.
Gentle is best
Avoid harsh cleansers or scrubs that strip oils. A mild, pH-balanced cleanser (around pH 4–5) protects the acid mantle. Dermatologists advise cleansing with gentle, low-foam formulas to preserve your barrier.
Listen to your skin
Overloading with too many products can stress even resilient skin. Keep it minimal, but effective.

Step 2: Actives & Essences
Layer products in order of texture, from lightest to richest. Our Always Refined Exfoliating Essence is water-light and designed to go first. Use it 2 to 3 times per week, morning or night, whatever suits your routine best. Just don’t use it in both routines on the same day. It uses lactic acid and TERACEUTIC FERMENT™, a gentle prebiotic ferment, to resurface and brighten without irritation.
If you’re using stronger actives (like retinoids or chemical exfoliants not from our range), alternate with barrier recovery nights. This allows your skin to benefit from actives without overloading. Our serums are gentle enough to be used daily, even on sensitive or recovering skin.
- When I Wake Daily Defence Serum: Use in the morning to deliver antioxidant support from a potent blend of Australian botanical cellular extracts, vitamin C and photobiome technology. Great for protecting against everyday environmental stress and preventing photoageing.
- Before I Sleep Restorative Serum: Use in the evening to calm, brighten and deeply restore with niacinamide, Prebiulin AGA™, Bright Oleoactif™, Regenight™, and Quandong Cellular Extract Concentrate. This serum is designed to brighten, minimise pigment and visible redness, repair overnight while supporting barrier and microbiome health.

AM Essential: Sunscreen
If you’re layering in the morning, always finish with sunscreen. It protects the hard work you’ve just done and defends your skin barrier from UV and pollution. Avoid using face oils under SPF in the morning, as they can dilute sunscreen or interfere with how well it adheres to your skin.
