Education, innovation and the ongoing quest to live a natural, toxic-free life that is gentle on our skin but also on the environment means that we have access to plenty of options when it comes to choosing natural and organic personal care products. The marketplace is booming with product lines that have eliminated known synthetic toxins, however products can be partially natural, or not entirely pure in their ingredient composition.
Without getting into a full chemistry lesson, here’s a list of synthetic and toxic ingredients you can start eliminating today!
PARABENS (IDENTIFIED AS ETHYL, BUTYL, PROPYL, METHOL)
These are preservative chemicals that increase the shelf life of products, however they are particularly inhibiting to our health as they produce estrogen-mimicking properties that have been associated with breast cancer, and infertility in both men and women.
SODIUM LAURYL SUKPHATE (SLS), and SODIUM LAURETH SULPHATE (SLES)
Known as a moderate hazardous chemical substance, which is found in beauty, personal care, and cleaning products, this is one to avoid as it has been linked to neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and cancer. It is commonly used as an emulsifier and foaming agent and may also be disguised in labelling under other names such as: sodium dodecyl sulfate, sulfuric acid, monododecyl ester, sodium salt, sodium salt sulfuric acid, sodium dodecyl sulfate, aquarex me or aquarex methyl.
In some languages, benzene means petrol, because that’s exactly it is! It’s a petroleum-derived substance that should be eliminated, particularly during pregnancy as it may affect foetal development and severely compromise your immune system.
Known as a flame-retardant that is used on clothes and textiles, this is a chemical also used on face, body washes, and shampoos, responsible for most skin irritations including psoriasis and eczema. Stay clear of this one!
Most commonly found in shampoos and conditioners, this is another synthetic compound that’s the culprit of persistent skin and eye irritations.
ARTIFICIAL AND SYNTHETIC COLOURS
Consumers are no longer impressed by bright-coloured shampoos and lotions because they’ve come to understand that they are, in most cases, artificial!
Whilst colours are present in all products, opt for natural ones, as those with the letters D or C are known carcinogens.
Start by doing an inventory of all the personal care products in your bathroom. Check their labels with great detail; we wont’ be surprised if you find many of these synthetic substances in them. This list is a start and provides a clear place to start elimination from.
